Great Notion Brewing and Barrel House
Great Notion officially opened on January 1, 2016 and has quickly made a big name for itself within the Portland beer scene. I would rate them one of the top 5 breweries in Portland and maybe even in the top 3. It's a small 7-barrel brewery that packs a big punch with a great variety of beer that includes sours and barrel-aged selections. They have a grill with a small selection of pub food and a nice outdoor seating area. We sat out on the patio and enjoyed dinner and a flight. Knowledgeable bartender, which is always nice. Update: Fat Head's Brewery is closing March 17, 2018 with a new brewery taking over this location. For more info, click here.
Fat Head's Brewery - Permanently Closed
Fat Head's is located in downtown in close proximity and walking distance to several other breweries. It is rated as one of the top breweries in Portland. There is lots of open space and plenty of seating at tables and around the bar. Good pub menu with lots of variety. Location: 131 NW 13th Avenue, Portland Updated Aug '15 |
Culmination Brewing
Culmination was recommended to me by some locals as having some really good beer, but I found their beer to be just average, which still much better than traditional beers. It could have been partly due to the poor service and grouchy bartender who was very unsociable and walked around with a scowl on her face. There were actually 2 bartenders when I went, and the second bartender was quite pleasant, but unfortunately, it was the other one that served me the most. One of the beers was actually quite good, but the others were, at best, average. Large interior in a building with other businesses, but the restroom is in another building with a code to enter. Very odd. Outdoor seating, which is nice, and a handful of kitchen menu items. Uncomfortably hot inside. Location: 2117 NE Oregon Street, Portland Updated Jul '16 |
Fire on the Mountain
Fire on the Mountain is a wing joint that also makes a handful of their own beers. I tried the Wonderin' Rye and couldn't help but wonder what the heck they were thinking about when brewing this. I had planned to try their wings here but service was extremely slow even though it wasn't very crowded, so I skipped it. Enough said. Location: 1708 East Burnside, Portland Updated Jul '16 |
Hair of the Dog
Hair of the Dog is one of the top 10 breweries in Oregon. They have a great selection of their draft beer - 11 to 12 taps, and an awesome vintage beer list which must be consumed in the taproom. They always have selections on tap which are barrel-aged and aged in their concrete egg. Small outdoor seating area although the taproom is located in a heavy traffic area. Pub fare is available here. This location is also close walking distance to several other breweries, so find a parking spot and enjoy them all. Location: 61 SE Yamhill Street, Portland Updated Apr '17 |
Sasquatch Brewing
This place has a large interior with outdoor seating. There was a separate restaurant-like room with quite a few tables, but the food served was only light pub fare, so it was a little confusing. It had kind of a rustic feel to it, but was also kind of messy inside. I had a burger and fries here and the fries tasted like nasty grease but the burger was OK. The beer was average for craft beer. There were 12 taps of which 8 were pouring beer. They were also serving a handful of ciders. Location: 6440 SW Capitol Highway, Portland Updated Jul '16 |
FlyBoy Brewing
FlyBoy is a small 1-barrel nano brewery that also sells a variety of craft beer on tap besides their own. It also doubles as a brewery supply store. There are about 20 taps serving a few of their own beers, a pretty decent list of domestic craft beer, a couple of international beers and a couple of ciders. Very good variety. The owner has a very good relationship with the local distributor so he is able to access some beer that other craft beer bars might not be able to get. Their own beers were very good and can definitely hold their own against an impressive tap selection. A new location just opened up a week ago (Apr 2017) in Tigard. This is a much bigger location and has a 7-barrel brewing system, which was purchased from Rogue Ales. Since they are still in their soft opening, the new brewing system is not yet on-line, but should be by the end of April. There are 26 taps of which only 2 were for their own beers. Look for this to expand as the new brewing system comes up. Besides their own beer, about half the remaining were from NW breweries and the other half were domestic craft. This location also serves up a nice selection of pub fare. Location: 15630 Boones Ferry Road #1A, Lake Oswego Location: 15230 SW SW Sequoia Parkway #120, Tigard Updated Apr '17 |
Max's Fanno Creek Brew Pub
Nice little brew pub with a good sized interior and outdoor seating overlooking Fanno Creek. There were eight of their beers on tap and some other generic lagers. More of a local spot than anything else. Full lunch and dinner menus. Location: 12562 SW Main Street, Tigard Updated Aug '15 |
Old Market Pub & Brewery
Old Market Pub & Brewery has about 10 of their beers on tap which don't ever seem to change. It's unfortunate, because I did not find their beer to be very appealing for a craft beer brewery. They also have several taps pouring American lager-style beer - Bud, Coors, etc. I guess they can't decide if they want to be a brewery or a local hangout. Menu consists of burgers, sandwiches and pizzas. The food was very good. Outdoor seating is noisy as it is located on a busy road. It is under the same ownership as the Broadway Grill & Brewery in Portland. Location: 6959 SW Multnomah Boulevard, Portland Updated Oct '15 |
Rogue Ales
Rogue Ales has several 'Meeting Places" in Portland and Newport Oregon. These have lots of beer on tap and often offer something unique. Rogue Distillery and Public House Public House in Portland is located downtown and close walking distance to multiple other breweries. This is one of my favorite places to return as on occasion they have special beers tapped. This is especially true if you time your visit with an Oregon beer event, which there are several. Good pub food menu. Friendly and sociable staff. This is also a distillery so you can get some decent spirits such as Dead Guy Whiskey. Outdoor seating available. Location: 1339 NW Flanders Street, Portland Updated Oct '16 Rogue Eastside Pub & Pilot Brewery This newest entry into the Rogue family of beer halls opened to the public in December 2016. It has a nice large taproom with 55 taps featuring 36 Rogue year-round and limited release or unique beers. In addition to the good Rogue beer, there are 19 guest beers, mostly from other local breweries. Good pub food available as well as an outdoor patio for non-rainy day enjoyment. The only negative was the bar had just a single TV located in an area only a small portion of the bar could view, so if your going here hoping to watch sports, it's probably not the best idea. Close walking proximity to several Eastside breweries, including Cascade Barrel House across the street. Location: 928 SE 9th Avenue, Portland Updated Apr '17 |
Ecliptic Brewing
Ecliptic Brewing is the brainchild of former Deschutes and Full Sail brewer, John Harris, who created beers such as Black Butte Porter and Mirror Pond, among others. They have a decent sized tap room that is sort of separated between a bar area and more of a casual restaurant/dining area. There are big doors off the bar that open up to a large outdoor patio. The kitchen offers up a nice selection of pub food. Uniquely designed flight paddle holds six 5 oz samples. There was a nice selection of 12 beers on tap. Location: 825 North Cook Street, Portland Updated Apr '17 |
