de Garde Brewing
Rated one of the top breweries in the United States, this small brewery focuses on spontaneously fermented (no cultured yeast) farmhouse ales. Located on the Oregon coast in the small, rural town of Tillamook, more known for its cheese. But since de Garde opened in 2013, this could definitely be changing. Two-thirds of the building on the right is used for fermentation and barrel-aging. Half of the other third is the taproom. I enjoyed my visit here immensely having drank some really good beer. It's a nice scenic hour and half drive from Portland and worth the trip. Nice outdoor seating area. No food but stop at the Tillamook cheese factory and bring some cheese to eat while you drink your farmhouse ales. Limited opening hours, so check their website. Pelican Brewing
Pelican Brewing has a few locations and I went to the one in downtown Tillamook, just a short drive from de Garde Brewing. These guys have been around for a long time - more than 20 years. They had 9 beers on tap and oddly, they did not have a beer menu. After I sat down for dinner, I had to walk up towards the bar to read the list on the wall next to the bar. A typical pub food menu is available. Outdoor patio with ample seating available. Brewing system is located in direct view of seating, so you are able to get a good look at their brewing operation while you enjoy some beer. Location: 1708 1st Street, Tillamook Updated Apr '17 |
