TianjIn
I had a free night in Tianjin by myself, awaiting my flight the following morning to Singapore. I stayed at the “Renaissance Hotel Downtown” in Tianjin. I admit that I was a bit worried I was not going to be able to find a good craft beer location in Tianjin. Checking the web was challenging as many of the websites were in Chinese. I found one possibility and went to ask the front desk to see what they knew about it and transportation options. To my surprise the gentleman at the desk knew of a much better place within walking distance from the hotel. He marked up a map with directions and off I went on my adventure.
YY Beer House
About 10-15 minutes from my hotel, I found a fabulous little place called Yue Yuan House. As I walked up to it, I was tempted to sit outside, as it was a nice night, however I wanted to see the inside of the place. It is relatively small with about 10 tables inside and another 5 or so outside on the sidewalk. It was about 80% full. I was happy I went in as it had a great small brewpub atmosphere. It was small, casual, with the feel of a local pub. While the beer and food were good, the one thing I really appreciated was the personal service. When I sat down, Mr. Lee (the owner) came over and introduced himself. We chatted briefly on his beer and then to my surprise he introduced me to Ping Ping who brews the beer. They even gave me a tour of their brewery (see photo at right), which was located in a room just behind the bar. Their English was excellent which made it very easy to discuss their beer selections and their personal favorites. They had six beers of their own on tap and a small collection of international craft beers in bottles. I enjoyed the following beer on tap.
As the night went on, I chatted with a few customers in nearby tables. I was surprised with the variety of places the people were from - England, Australia, Thailand, and the US. They mostly lived in the area and said this is the best place in town to enjoy craft beers. And I do agree, it was a memorable evening of good people and good beer.
