Portugal
For most of the past 100 years, there were only 2 producers of beer in Portugal and was tightly controlled by the totalitarian dictatorship during most of the 1900s. But in recent years, control of the brewing industry has slowly loosened and by 2003, Portugal had a whopping 7 breweries. The largest Portuguese brewery, Sociedade Central de Cervejas, is now controlled by Heineken. As local laws become more relaxed, micro breweries are beginning to pop up, especially in large cities such as Lisbon where their first brewpub opened in 2015. Craft beer bars are also becoming extremely popular.
Lisbon
Museu da Cerveja
The Beer Museum was my first stop after arriving in Lisbon. It's located right along the coast of the Tagus River. 5 Euros gets you a self-guided tour of the museum and a beer which you can grab before you begin the tour and drink while walking through the second floor museum. The museum provides a good and interesting overview of the history of beer in Portugal prior to the recent craft beer influence and dating back thousands of years. After your tour, enjoy some steak, seafood or delicious bacalhau (codfish pastry) in their large restaurant or patio. The bacalhau is made in a small cart and can be seen in the picture on the right. Dois Corvos
Dois Corvos (Two Crows) became Lisbon's first brewpub by opening a small taproom in 2015, although, they had been brewing beer commercially for a few years prior to this. Their 17-barrel brewing system, which is clearly visible from the taproom, allows them to pour a variety beer from 14 taps on-site as well as distribute to local bars and restaurants. They are not located in the city center so they are not accessible by subway which means you will need to take a bus from the last subway station (or taxi) but it's definitely worth the visit because their beer is above average. (If you buy a metro day pass, buses are included in the fare). A destination brewery in Lisbon for beer lovers so you are bound to meet new friends here. Location: Rua Cap. Leitão 94 Nearest Metro: Santa Apolónia (Red Line) then 728 bus to Pálacio da Mitra Updated Sep '17 |
Fábrica Musa
Musa, is located in Marvila on the edge of Lisbon, opened a taproom in the summer of 2016. The taproom has 2 floors of seating that overlooks both the brewery and the taproom. The first floor bar serves up to 12 taps of their beer, which was very good. They have a unique and fun naming convention to their beers - they are all plays on the names of songs or bands, such a Red Zeppelin Ale. Located just a couple block from Dois Corvos, so make sure to visit them both. Location: Rua do Açúcar 83 Nearest Metro: Santa Apolónia (Red Line) then 728 bus to Praça da Armada Updated Sep '17 |
Quimera Brewpub
Really neat historic location.in what used to be the horse tunnel for the Palácio das Necessidades. Originally built in the 1700s in gratitude for prayers answered by Our Lady of Needs, it became the residence of the Kings from the Braganza dynasty and was used into the 1900s. The horse tunnel was allegedly built for quick escapes from the palace. Since 2016 it became home to Lisbon's second brewpub - Quimera. The interior almost gives you the feeling of being in a Medieval dungeon, but without any torture. The quality of beer will quickly make you feel like you are in the right place. 12 taps serve a handful of Quimera's beer and the remaining pump out local craft beer from nearby breweries, some of which don't have taprooms. The owners are extremely nice and very knowledgeable about the local brewing industry. The brewer/owner also moonlights at another brewery - Lince, which is located in close proximity to Dois Corvos and Musa but does not have a taproom. The menu consists of light New York deli style sandwiches and you'll get a small bowl of chickpeas to munch on while enjoying your beer and the amazing ambiance. Duque Brewpub
Small brewpub and nano brewery on a quiet pedestrian walkway in the center of Lisbon. Friendly and knowledgeable staff serve local beer and a few of their own brews from 12 taps. They also have a beer cooler from which to select from about 50 different beers, all from local breweries. The beer in the coolers can either be drank in the bar or brought home with you. A few seats outside to enjoy your beer. Location: Calçada do Duque 51 Nearest Metro: Baixa-Chiado (Blue Line) Updated Sep '17 |
