Albany and Nearby Cities
Albany Pump Station
Albany pump station is an old water works pumping station built around 1870 that was partially renovated into a brewery/restaurant. They retained the name 'Pump Station' and the brewery name is CH Evans Brewing, which makes the full name of the location CH Evans Brewing Company at the Albany Pump Station. I didn't find the beer especially flavorful, but it wasn't bad either. Full food menus throughout the day. Location: 19 Quackenbush Square, Albany Updated Mar '15 |
Brown's Brewing Co.
Brown's brewing has 3 locations in upstate New York (2 in Troy). I visited the Troy Taproom which is along the Hudson River. Unfortunately, when I was there, it was still winter, so I was unable to enjoy the large outdoor seating area which overlooks the river. This place gets very busy, so plan ahead. Fun place to go and meet new people. Beer is good and the standard pub fare is good too. Location: 417 River Street, Troy Updated Mar '15 |
Druthers Brewing Company
Druthers Brewing has 2 locations - 1 in Albany and 1 in Saratoga Springs. Great all around brewpub in Albany. A fairly recent entry into the craft beer scene has not stopped them from producing some very good beer. Large brewery on site with lots of room for expansion. Light pub fare available all day. The Saratoga Springs location is nice and large with a huge outdoor patio. Location: 1053 Broadway, Albany 381 Broadway, Saratoga Springs Updated Nov '15 |
Hyde Park Brewing Company
Located in central New York, just north of Poughkeepsie, along the Hudson river. Hyde Park is famous for being the home of U.S. President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The brewery is across from FDR's home, library and Museum. The interior is decorated with lots of the Roosevelt's (FDR and wife Eleanor) memorabilia. This makes the brewery itself very interesting. They have permission from FDR's grandson, who stops in from time to time for a beer, to use photos of FDR on the menu cover. Location: 4076 Albany Post Road, Hyde Park Updated Jan '15 |
Rare Form Brewing
Rare Form is a small 5-barrel nanobrewery near Albany in Troy. No food here, just really good beer. They serve up 4 year-round beers and a handful of seasonal or experimental beers. Location: 90 Congress Street, Troy Updated Nov '15 |
Shmaltz Brewing Company
For nearly 20 years, Shmaltz Brewing was just a contract brewer, making beer for someone else. In 2013, they took it up another level and opened it's own brewery and tap house in Clifton Park. They have a 50-barrel brewhouse, as well as an aging program. Their claim to fame, besides making some pretty awesome beer, is the HE'BREW beer line. They also release a special anniversary ale every year. Their beer is one of the best in NY and consequently, the taproom gets quite busy. Location: 6 Fairchild Square, Clifton Park Updated Nov '15 |
Olde Saratoga Brewing Co.
Olde Saratoga, a 125-barrel brewery, was acquired by Mendocino Brewing in California and now operates as a subsidiary. As the East Coast arm of Mendocino, it allows them to brew and distribute Mendocino's beer on the East Coast. The taproom is wide open with just a few large tables. Lot's of standing room available to gather with friends. The night I was there, all their business was growler fills. I was the only seated customer enjoying a flight of 6 beers. There are 21 beers on tap, so it offers a nice selection of their beers. They brew several of their beers with coffee, using a locally coffee - Death Wish, which claims to be the world's strongest coffee. I didn't care much for the coffee IPA but the others were all good. There is no food available here. Location: 131 Excelsior Ave, Saratoga Springs Updated Oct '16 |
Argyle Brewing Company
Avery Brewery is classified a "Farm Brewery" under New York Law, which basically means that they get some special considerations in return for brewing their beer with most of the ingredients being grown in New York. One of the unique considerations is that Farm Breweries are allow to see beer at farmer's markets. Oh boy! Argyle Brewing is a small-batch brewery located in a tiny city about 30 minutes east of Saratoga Springs. No food is served here but it's a great place to have a beer and chat with friends. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. Location: One Main Street, Greenwich Updated Oct '16 |
Artisanal Brew Works
New nano brewery that opened in the summer of 2016 in Saratoga Springs. Started by 2 high school teachers by day and brewers by night - Kurt and Collin. Kurt's background as a chemist lends itself nicely to helping them create their own yeasts in a small culture lab. His specialty is Belgian yeasts. In fact, Kurt has created his own Belgian strain derived from a Westvleteren yeast. The Belgian beer they had on tap were definitely very good. There were seven beers on tap which consisted of IPAs, Belgians, brown ale, spiced ale and a pale ale. A neat homemade chandelier made from a barrel and Belgian beer bottles hangs over the center of the bar. No food available, but pretzels are served with the beer. The bar is on the second floor of a large shed-like building with a distillery on the first floor. Plenty of table seating adjacent to the bar area.
