CAPETOWN and Stellenbosch
Capetown has an excellent craft beer scene. Known as one to the more westernized cities in Africa, it is not surprising you can find a good collection of microbreweries. The area has a broad offering of breweries and tap rooms, drinking (and eating) establishments and beer festivals; all will make Capetown a nice place to drink beer.
Stellenbosch is located about an hour outside of Cape Town and is well known for their wine. You will find a nice small downtown with lots of colonial architecture, University of Stellenbosch, and surrounded by beautiful vineyards and mountains. Though famous for the wine, Stellenbosch has two breweries that were started just outside of downtown with rapidly growing popularity in the area.

Devils Peak Brewery
It is aptly named after the wondrous view of Devils Peak at their brewery. Along with Lions Head and Table Mountain, Devils Peak is part of Cape Town's famous skyline. This is a classic tap room with prominent bar and large seating area. The entrance is a little hidden around the corner of the place but easy to find if you know where you're going. Sitting outside along their small balcony will give amazing views of the peak. Devil's Peak has a wide selection of beer and many good seasonal or canned crafts! One favorite is their Love Parade, which is a wonderful Berliner Weisse. Location: 95 Durham Avenue, Salt River, Cape Town Updated: Sep '17 |
Woodstock Brewery
Located in the western suburb of Woodstock and also taking it's name from the famous Rock Festival in the 60s. Woodstock is an great place to hang out and have a beer. There is a small bar downstairs with long picnic style tables inside and out. Upstairs you'll find a nice restaurant serving both good food and Woodstock's beer. My favorite thing about this brewery is the crafty names of their beers. On tap you'll find great beers with punny names revolving around sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll. The taster flight is highly recommend. Beers on Tap:
Our two favorites; Hazy Daze and the Acid Queen. Location: 252 Albert Road, Woodstock, Cape Town Updated: Sep '17 |

Stellenbosch Brewery
A great place because of it's open brew room and beautiful surroundings. They brew all 6 of their beers on site behind the bar and have a large inside seating area as well as a green lawn over looking a small pond with a few picnic tables. It's been around since 2016 and are starting to distribute more widely in the country. Very nice flight with 6 distinctly different beers!

Stellenbrau Brewery
They have been around since 2012 and their Craven Lager has already won the top lager at the Global Craft Beer Awards in Berlin in 2014. The brew pub is located about 5 minutes outside of downtown and in a small modern mall. I will admit we got lost trying to find the entrance, which is just outside of the mall. Once in the doors, I recognized the familiar smell of beer but was still confused as where to find the bar - with help we found it. The big brewing tanks were to our left and we followed some stairs and found the bar overlooking the large tanks. Nice, small place probably fits about 25 people. They had four beers on tap during our visit.
