Japan has slightly more than 200 craft breweries as of 2014, which might be considered a leader in Asia craft beer. But compared to the United States, it is in its infancy. The number of craft breweries grew to over 500 when Japan deregulated its craft beer industry in the mid '90s. Poor beer quality and business practices cause most of these to close. The number is now starting to grow again as young beer drinkers and tourists seek out craft beer. A lot of craft beer bars are popping up all over Tokyo, with Popeye's leading the way with 70 taps. It's getting easier and easier to locate good craft beer in Japan.
