Ecuador
It was nice to see Ecuador is part of the global craft beer community. The country has a surprisingly strong craft beer industry as well a few established traditional breweries. Craft beers are available at brew pubs and from a couple of small craft beer bottlers.
quito
This is a very interesting city in the mountains of Ecuador. A common through-city and airport for those on the way to the Galapagos Islands. The tourist office has some nice walking routes throughout the city; primary points of interest are churches, museums and a few government sites. There is also a tram ride to the top of a local mountain which provides wonderful views overlooking the city and surrounding area. It was a bit surprising that a quick internet search found a few small craft breweries.
Bandido Brewing Great little place with an old historic feel. They open 4:00pm, so do not stop by for a mid-afternoon beer. We did only to find them closed. A late afternoon taxi ride from hotel back over to Bandido was required to enjoy their beers. They offer a 4 beer flight. This made it easy to taste a few of their beers. They had four standard beers and two seasonals. However I sensed even the standards seem to switch out a bit over time. They also have free popcorn to enjoy with your beer.

The Turtle’s Head
This is located a mile or two from the center plaza area. It is only one block away from the Quito Marriott, which is a very nice hotel. Turtle’s Head is a much larger place than Bandido Brewing. The bar was broken up into 4-5 different sitting areas, with probably 20 plus tables and a full food menu. They also had two foosball tables and darts. There was also an area with large TVs showing Soccer games. The woman serving beers was wonderful, very nice and polite. However she ask me not to thank her by name in my review of the brewpub. They had about 6-8 of their own beers on tap. The beer was good, some very good. Their beer names are very direct.
Also the patio area is gated, we had to hit a door bell buzzer to have the gate unlocked so we could enter the brewpub. Location: Olmedo E1-136 y Fermin Cevallos, Quito Updated Jan '17 |
The galapagos islands
Galapagos Islands
We spent a week on an amazing cruise around the Galapagos Islands, on a ship called "La Pinta", hiking, snorkeling, and kayaking. The ships bar actually had a few different Ecuadorian beers to choose from.
We spent a day ashore on Santa Cruz Island to see the Charles Darwin Research Station. In the walk around town we stopped by a place with a few beers from "Cherusker", a small craft brewery in Quito. We had lunch at the Finch Echo Bay Hotel and was again surprised by their selection of beer from Santana Brewing - Amber, Pale Ale, Irish Red and Chulla Chela. Updated Jan '17 |
