BAsel

Basel may be a small Swiss City (some of its suburbs are actually in France) but it is very good place for craft beer. There are about five craft breweries that serve their beer in tap rooms at the breweries and about the same number of craft breweries without taprooms who are supplying beer to the area via restaurants and bottles shops.

This is a surprisingly large place. They have a great seating area indoors with padded lounge chairs, a long bar area and about 20 tables inside. There is also an even larger outdoor patio area. It was beautifully sunny and warm, so the patio was a wonderful place to enjoy a few beers. They had about 8 beers on tap and full bar. They also have a great growler bottle with a mechanical locking top that is re-sealable.

Beer list during my visit:
  • Halleluja Wheat
  • Rye Red Ale
  • Lager
  • Randy Redneck Beetroot Pale Ale
  • Nice Try IPA
  • Farmhouse Ale w/strawberries
  • Farmhouse Ale w/strawberries & pepper

Location: Voltastrasse 30, 4056 Basel

This is a small, friendly and energetic place.  Only a short walk from the center of town. They have a great history. They started brewing about 5 years ago. First for themselves and then for friends. Quickly, it just grew and grew. Now they have a nice small and growing brewery. The taproom opened in 2016. They have about 8 tables inside and a small seating area out front on the sidewalk. Jill gave me a nice tour of their brewing area. Thanks Jill! One uniques and interesting thing to note; their beers are primarily available in bottles. So even while drinking here at the brew pub, most of the beers were only available in bottles.

The beers were very good as was the wide selection of beer types. There were about 9 beers in bottles and a couple more on tap at the brewery.  Note the taproom opens at 18:00 (6:00pm), so make the plans for an evening beer or two.

  • Vom Fass. - Red Ale
  • Rotes - Brown Ale
  • Grunts - Pale Ale
  • Blaues - Herb/spice beer (excellent)
  • Schwarzes -Dunkel
  • Silbernes - IPA
  • Goldenes - Porter
  • Einmaliges - special/single batch beer

Fischerstube Restaurant - Ueli Bier

This place has a duel identity, combining the Fischerstube restaurant and brewery. Their beer is sold under the Ueli brand name. They share the building brewing beer and serving good food. Ueli beers are also available in stores around town. It is located a block off the river in a old section of town. They have about 12 tables inside. The place was packed on a Saturday afternoon, with reservations taking most of the tables. They also do group brewery tours if you call well in advance.

The beer offering is 5 beers on tap; 4 are regulars and 1 is special brew or seasonal.
  • Ueli Reverenz Special Hell
  • Ueli lager hell
  • Ueli Robur Dunkel
  • Ueli Weizen Obergarig
  • Ueli Weizen Bock (the special)

Location: Rheingasse 45, 4058 Basel

Nice place, however the entrance was a bit hard to find. The entrance is around the corner from the address in a small courtyard.  I ended up just asking a women on the street for help and she pointed me to where the entrance was. Very cool once you find it.   They have been in this location for about 10 years.

It is a good sized place. you could come with a large group. They have about 6-8 large mega-tables and a few regular tables, as well as long bar with ~6 bar stools. They have 5 beers on tap and another 10 beers available in bottles. All the beers are their own.  Food options are limited to a couple of wurst options or a very good warm pretzel. You can also buy 6-packs and mini-kegs to take with you when you leave.

Beers Enjoyed:
  • Blond - Helles
  • Sommer - Spiced/Herbed Bier
  • Amber - Lager
  • Monats - Belgian
  • Bierraritat - Barrel Aged Weizenbock  (This was fabulous!)
