Liquid Riot Bottling Company
Great location right down in the waterfront district. They have an interesting description of themselves - a Brewery/Distillery/Resto-Bar, however it matches. They brew, distill and have a full restaurant. It has a good bar feel, dark wood, well-used feel and visible brewery equipment. They also have a small patio out back. They have flights available and you can choose beers to make up your personal flight, built with 4-ounce glasses for $2.50 each. The menu had 14 beers to choose from; Ales, IPAs, Belgians, a Kolsch and even a few sours. Location: 250 Commercial St, Portland, ME Updated Aug '16 |
Allagash Brewing
This brewery was on the outside of town, about a 15 minute drive from the waterfront area. Much to our surprise the beer was free. However there is a catch. All they offer here is a flight of 4 beers. The beers here are unique to this location and not available anywhere else. They do have cold beer in bottles for purchase, however you cannot drink them in the bar. They are to take with you when you leave. We took home the Allagash White, which is a slightly spicy Belgian wit beer. The flight of the day was:
Flights change frequently based on seasonality and beers that are in the process of being brewed. Good people here - we ended up taking with Paul. He was great, polite, knowledgeable about beer, and overall a good beer guy. Thanks Paul! You made the visit memorable. Make sure to ask if they are pouring a special beer. Chances are good and it will get you a fifth pour. Shhhh - don't tell them we told you... Location: 50 Industrial Way, Portland Updated Oct '16 |
Gritty McDuff's Brewing Company
This brewery has been around a long time. They started brewing in 1988 and claim to be “Maine’s Original Brew Pub”. Gritty’s has 3 brew pubs in Maine. Their Portland brew pub is half a block up from the pier in the waterfront district. It is a two story bar. The upstairs is large area with a bar and a full restaurant. The lower level has a small bar area and a small patio out the back door. There are a few tables in the cobblestone street out the lower level (see photo to right). Location: 396 Fore Street, Portland Updated Aug '16 |
Shipyard Brewpub
Shipyard Brewpub is located just north of Portsmouth, NH at the southern border of Maine. The main brewery is located further north in Portland. Nice sized brewpub and the wait staff is very friendly. Menu includes standard pub fare as well as seafood. Go for the seafood, after all, you're in Maine. Only their own beers are served on tap. Location: 8 Levesque Drive, Eliot Commons, Eliot Updated Sep '15 |
Foundation Brewing Company
There are a number of very good breweries in Maine. Foundation is one of the better ones. Located on the same block as Allagash, you can't pass up the opportunity to visit both on the same trip. They've only been open a couple of years and have quickly made a name for themselves. I know several people who trade their beer back and forth across the country. The tasting room is simplistic with just a few seats around the bar and picnic tables scattered around the large room. But don't let the no-frills interior deter you from enjoy some really good beer in 4-ounce or 10-ounce pours. Or, get some to take with you. Location: 1 Industrial Way #5, Portland Updated Aug '17 |
Bissell Brothers
Bissell Brothers rapidly became one of the best breweries in Maine, quickly outgrowing their initial location and moved to a much larger place which is now the largest taproom in Maine. The spacious taproom sports 2 floors of seating and a large outdoor patio. The second floor seating provides a great top view of the brewing system as well as an open viewing to seating and the bar below. Beer flows from up to 12 taps and is limited to 5 or 10 ounce pours. No food served on-site and I did not notice a food truck when I was there. Location: 4 Thompsons Point #108, Portland Updated Aug '17 |
Maine Beer Co
Great brewery and taproom located about 15 miles north of Portland. Two brothers originally started with just a single beer - Peeper, then slowly grew their beer portfolio. Their focus is more on doing it right than doing large varieties of beer styles. Maine Beer Co is unique in that they give 1% of their sales and 100% of the tips to environmental nonprofit organizations. The taproom isn't overly spacious but there is plenty of outdoor seating available to enjoy up to 8 draft beers. There is a nice window view overlooking the brewing operations. There is a food truck on-site to satisfy your hunger while you enjoy some of their great beer. Location: 525 US-1, Freeport Updated Aug '17 |
Tributary Brewing Co
Tributary Brewing is located in the southeastern part of Maine bordering New Hampshire. Started by a long-time New England master brewer and is just off the coast and only a couple miles north of Portsmouth. Up to 6 draft beers are available to enjoy in the bar area looking into the brewery or on a large outdoor patio. Live music played on weekends. No food served on site but you can bring in your own food from a number of nearby local restaurants. Location: 10 Shapleigh Road, Kittery Updated Aug '17 |
