Milan
When I was looking for craft beer in Italy, I was thinking typical Euro lager style beers. However, what I found was exactly the opposite. Sure, there is Peroni which manufactures beer in that category, but I was extremely surprised to find that Milan has been at the forefront of brewing craft beer in Europe.
Baladin Milano
Birra Baladin started 20 years ago, in 1996, and has nearly 20 locations around Italy. Baladin Milano resides near the central part of Milan. I went on a Sunday night right about the time they opened. Crowd was light, beer was good. About 12 taps. No chairs at the bar, so not especially inviting to single patrons, but I did stand at the bar for a while and had a nice discussion with the bartender about Italian craft beer. Beers tried:

Birrificio di Lambrate
Great brewpub and night spot. I went here on a Sunday night and Tuesday night. The beer and atmosphere were so great, I had to return a second night. Very crowded both nights with a very friendly, most local crowd. About 30 beers on tap. No food menu at this location, just light sandwiches. Beers tried:

La Belle Alliance
Great craft beer bar and great selection of draft and bottle beer - both domestic and international. Several taps of beer available from cask. Bartender, owner and people sitting near me at the bar were all very friendly and personable. Discussed one of the beers on tap that had an off-flavor with the owner, which then he decided to empty the keg and tap another. The second keg was much better. Excellent example of not selling bad beer and losing customers. Great place for beer conversation. Beers tried:

Bere Buona Birra
Small nanobrewery with just a few beers on tap and a selection of bottles. It's not clear that they are actually selling any beer that they might brew or what name they brew under. Very local patronage who tended to speak among themselves. Beer tried:

BQ - Birra Artigianale di Qualità
Multiple locations around Milan. The location I went to was very small and did not have a bar area to sit at, only order. A few small tables which were not very appealing to me, however the general location was very interesting - along a canal with lots of little bars and restaurants. Beer tried:

Lambiczoon
Very good selection of international craft beer and burgers. There were about 12 beers on tap. The beer was great, the burger was OK. Staff was very knowledgeable about their beer. Large bar area as well as seating. Beers tried:

Sloan Square
They say it's the place to be and I cannot disagree. There is a amazing selection of 24 beers on tap from around the world and lots of bottles to choose from. Large bar area and additional restaurant seating with full food menu. I found this place late at night on my last day in Milan. Had I found it earlier, I would have returned for a second visit. Could be the best place for craft beer in Milan. Location: 2, Pl. Cadorna, Milano Nearest Metro: Cadorna FN Station, Line 2 Updated Sep '16 |
