Heretic Brewing
My experience with Heretic beer was limited to a few beers during my travels to Asia because they don't distribute where I live in the U.S. Since I found them enjoyable, I didn't pass up a chance to stop by the brewery when I was in the area. I wasn't disappointed. They had a nice selection of 16 taps including a few barrel-aged beers. A new very large taproom was open adjacent to the original smaller taproom but it wasn't 100% functional yet. But it was very spacious and in full view of barrel-aging and the brewing system. No food is served but they offer a few snacks and there is an occasional food truck. Location: 1052 Horizon Drive, Fairfield Updated Jul '17 |
The Rare Barrel
I had been wanting to get here for a long time but all of my previous California trips brought me to the area during the first part of the week when they weren't open. Perseverance paid off and I finally made it to this highly rated sour beer company. Their lineup was solid and each of the beers I tried was quite good. There was nice consistency in the flavor and quality with each of the beers I had. There was already a nice crowd in the taproom when I arrived a few minutes after they opened. Not much for food here but you can get a fresh grilled cheese sandwich from them. If you like sour ales, The Rare Barrel is a must visit destination for you. 21st Amendment Brewery (San Francisco)
For those readers not familiar with American history, the brewery takes the name of the constitutional amendment that ended prohibition in the United States in 1933. 21st Amendment sits just a couple blocks of the bay. This bi-level brewery has the bar and bar seating on the main floor with additional seating area upstairs. There's also a large seating area outside along the street. The 6-beer flights are served in rusty cupcakes tins, which is a unusual to say the least, but you go there for the beer, not the cupcakes. 10 beers on tap with an occasional guest beer and a typical bar food menu (without cupcakes). This location is the "experimental" brewery with a 12-barrel brewing system and they have a nice pub-style food menu. Location: 563 2nd Street, San Francisco Nearest Metro: 2nd & King, Light Rail Multiple Lines Updated Sep '16 21st Amendment Brewery (San Leandro)
This location houses the production brewery along with a large, spacious taproom, outdoor patio and indoor game area for bocce ball and cornhole. Massive 500-barrel fermenters and bright tanks as well as 125-barrel brewing tanks are in full view of the taproom. It's really an amazing site to see the magnitude of this brewery. No restaurant at this location but there is a food truck parked at the patio. A good selection of 12 beers are on tap. Location: 2010 Williams Street, San Leandro Updated Jul '17 |
