Taiwan Beer Brewery
This is also known as Taipei Brewery or Taipei Brewery 346. It was a difficult place to find initially using Google Maps. I headed to the location it directed me, however after walking around several blocks, I was unable to locate it. I could see a highway overpass a few blocks away, so I thought it was a logical direction to walk. I only got 1 block when I noticed a familiar beer-brewing aroma in the air. I kept walking and the aroma got stronger and stronger, so I knew I had to be headed in the right direction. On the other side of the overpass, you could see the very large factory. Down another block was the bottle shop which had a couple of Taiwan Beer taps. Mostly people go there to buy take-home beer or drink a bottle outside on one of the picnic tables. There was a bar outside, but during the afternoon it wasn't manned, so I don't know if they have a bigger variety at night or on the weekend. I've heard they have music at night. The factory provided brewery tours, but since I wasn't looking specifically for another tour, as I've been on many, I had the familiar Taiwan Beer. Not much happening in the afternoon, but there is plenty of outdoor seating, so probably gets busier at other times. Ho'dala/ZhangMen Craft Brewery
As I understood it from the bartender, the brewery is actually called Zhangmen Brewery which is located NW of Taipei City. The brewpub is Ho'dala and there is also a second location in Kaohsiung. This is a great craft beer bar with 16 taps which are mostly their own beer but also have a couple guest taps. The beer styles rotate regularly and they perform regular maintenance on their taps. I've visited a couple of times and highly recommend it for the quality of beer, which is better than the typical Taiwanese brewed beer. Indoor and outdoor seating. No food, just good beer. During my last visit, there were a couple new things - they now serve beer from 20 taps and they have started barrel-aging with 2 taps pouring barrel-aged beer. It continues to be a great place to drink beer. Location: No. 10, Lane 4, Yongkang St, Da’an District Nearest Metro: Dongmen Station, Lines 2 (Red) and 4 (Yellow) Updated May '17 |
Jolly Brewery
Below average brewery that doesn't ever seem to change their beer line-up. I stopped here twice, 2 years apart, and the 6-beer list was exactly the same. Below average, even for Taiwan. Beer, is brewed on-site. The main attraction has got to be the Thai-style food which is highly recommended by locals. They seem to have good crowds eating and reservations are usually needed. Perhaps the beer is secondary and I've had several people tell me they don't drink beer when they go there to eat. Le Ble D'or
Chain restaurant that has 10 locations throughout Taiwan. There are 4-6 beers on tap, which don't every seem to change. I've only been to one location, but I have been there a couple times. The first time I went, Tim and I happened to be in Taiwan at the same time, so we met to have a beer. He had been here before. Beer flavor and quality is average for Taiwan. The restaurant was a cross between Hawaiian and German beer hall themed, but the food was western and Taiwanese. The location I went to is on the top floor of large shopping complex (Q-square) next toTaipei Main Station. Location #3: Section 1, Chengde Road, Datong District Nearest Metro: Taipei Main Station, Lines 2 (Red) and 5 (Blue) Updated Jul '15 |
Oh Mai (oh麥)
This place is a short walk from the Sheraton Hotel in Hsinchu, which is how I found it. Asian fusion food is served along with their own beer which is brewed off-site. The food is quote good and the beer is average for Taiwan. There are only a few beers to choose from - Pils, Dunkel, Wheat and I think one other. By the way, Mai translates to wheat in English. Great place to socialize with colleagues after work. Location: No.105 Zhuangjing South Road, Zhubei City Nearest Metro: N/A, However, THSR Hsinchu Station is about 15-20 minutes by walking. Hsinchu MRT stops at same station. Updated Dec '15 |
Something Ales
Neighborhood bar that is quite small but packs a large punch with its impressive selection of bottled international ales. It could be the cheapest place for imported craft beer in Taipei, which probably is related to the small size of the bar. The owner seemed to be quite knowledgeable about the beer he sells. Location: No. 195, Section 3, Roosevelt Road Nearest Metro: Taipower Building Station, Line 3 (Green) Updated Jan '16 |
Paulaner Brauhaus
Paulaner Brauhaus is a German brewery with locations around the world. This location has a little bit of Germany in Taiwan, but not a lot. It has a heavy Taiwanese influence in the food. There are only 2 beers on tap. A little difficult to figure out how to get into the actual building. It is quite visible from the street and is on the 2nd floor of a building connected to the MRT station, but you cannot access it through the station itself. You need to exit the station, go to the back of the building, enter another store and take their escalator up to the second floor. Live music in the evenings. Location: 2F, Urban One, No. 1, Qingcheng St, Songshan Nearest Metro: Zhongxiao Fuxing Station, Line 1 (Brown) Updated Aug '16 |
Mikkeller Bar
Open only four months (May 2016), the word is slowly getting out about this new bar in Taipei. Similar to other Mikkeller Bars in Asia, it's quite simple with lots of Mikkeller tap beer (24) and a few guest taps. No food is served and credit cards are not accepted. First floor bar is standing room only. There is also a second floor with lots of tables but you will need to go back to the first floor to order a beer. There was no waitress upstairs during the time I visited. Location: No. 241, Nanjing West Road Nearest Metro: Beimen Station, Line 3 (Green) Updated Feb '17 |
Asakusa Shuzo
Asakusa is a tasting room and bottle shop for Baird Beer (Japan). There are just a couple of beers on draft and everything else is bottled in the cooler. Cozy atmosphere where you can enjoy a little bit of Japan in Taiwan. No food served, but there are ample places close by to get your food and bring it to the bar while you enjoy your beer. Lots of beer style variety that should satisfy everyone's liking. Location: No.42, Alley 5, Lane 147, Section 1, Keelung Road, Xinyi District Nearest Metro: Taipei City Hall Station, Line 5 (Blue) Updated Feb '17 |
