Daga Brewpub
There are two locations and I have been to both. Both are good sized craft beer bars with a decent selection of international craft beer, including some Chinese beer. They also have a special house beer brewed by Chinese brewer Master Gao. Western food is on the menu. Only bad thing was they didn't accept credit cards, however, the location at 99 Fuxing Road now does. Location 2 is my preference as they have 2 bars (upstairs and down) with a bigger beer selection. They also have a nice bottle selection. It is next to a Boxing Cat location, so you can enjoy them both on the same evening. No website. World of Beer
Part of the WoB chain of craft beer bars found in the US and around the world, the first location opened in Shanghai during the summer of 2016 with plans to open up additional locations. They boast 500+ bottles of beer and 50 beers on tap. The beer is very typical to what you can find almost anywhere around the world, just more of it. No whales to pick, just standard Euro lagers and American craft beer. Huge indoor bar/restaurant area and a nice patio outside. Located next to Dr. Beer. Goose Island Brewhouse
Goose Island has opened its first China brewpub in March 2017. It's a nice multi-level bar with the upstairs opening up to the first level. There are bars on both levels. They were still in their soft opening when I went, so there was still some construction occurring in the brewery and Goose Island beer was also limited. There were 3 standard Goose Island beers on tap and 4 locally brewed beers which had a definite Chinese influence in the flavor. There was a small infuser in the end of the bar where they were infusing fruit or herbs into their beer. I was hoping to score some BCBS but they didn't have any on tap. They did have a limited stash, not available to the general public (you had to ask a manager), of the 2015 BCBS but it had a steep price tag of ~$125 US. I was told it was a typical selling price for BCBS in China. They also had a few varieties of sour sister beer which could be drank on-site or bought to-go. They have plans to add barrel-aged beers, collaboration beers and cask ales over time. Food menu is American pub style. The side of the street with Goose Island is a newly rebuilt block that has a few other bars and restaurants, including a Hard Rock Cafe. WiFi can only be accessed if you have a Chinese phone number. This was very inconvenient. Location 1: 209 Maoming North Road Nearest Metro: Nanjing West Road Station, Line 2 Updated Mar '17 |
The Hop Project
The Hop Project is a craft beer bar from Little Creatures Brewery in Australia. They are located on the bar/restaurant-heavy street Daga Road, where many of the Yongkang Road bars have moved since they were closed down by the city. As you might expect, Hop Project features Little Creatures beer. There are 6 taps pouring Little Creatures beer and they also have a bottle list of about 60 which includes a mix of West Coast US beer, Aussie and New Zealand beer. Food focus is cheese - they have 15 different type of generously-portioned cheese sandwiches. I tried one and it was delicious. No beer brewed on location. Front of bar completely opens up to a small patio. Location 1: 372 Daga Road Nearest Metro: Nanjing West Road Station, Line 13, 2, 12 Updated Mar '17 |
Hitachino Mansion
Hitachino is a welcome addition to the China craft beer scene, especially since ABInBev gobbles up what used to be good local breweries and heavily pushes their beer in local bars. Hitachino Nest Beer is the craft beer arm of the nearly 200-year old Japanese sake maven - Kiuchi Brewery. Hitachino Mansion opened in October 2017 and sports a multi-level brewpub and restaurant featuring Japanese cuisine. The first floor houses the brewery, which is not fully functional yet but will be in early 2018, and a small bar. There is also a nice patio out front and a larger one on the side. Combined with the second floor restaurant and small bar, they both serve typical Japanese pub food. The third floor is a traditional teppanyaki restaurant with a larger bar and terrace seating with full windows that open up to the pedestrian path of Sinan Mansions (shops and food). The fourth level is a members-only whiskey lounge. Only Hitachino Nest beer is served from their 11 taps and a small selection of bottles. All of the beer is currently brewed in the large Hong Kong Hitachino Nest brewery. Only local credit cards are accepted, which is unfortunate because they have the highest priced beer in shanghai.
